Há um ótimo artigo de William Saletan na Slate sobre a dificuldade do presidente americano em encarar a realidade tal como ela é, em contraste com a realidade tal como ele imagina que ela fosse.
De fato, há muito de platônico nos delírios gnósticos dos defensores do papel da “grande nação americana”; na reconstrução do mundo à sua imagem e semelhança.
Há muito de platônico também na obstinada recusa dessa gente a encarar os fatos, como evidencia sua recusa a reconhecer que o furor belicista que antecedeu o ataque ao Iraque estava equivocado.
Saletan observa, em Bush, a incrível capacidade de priorizar as próprias concepções subjetivas em detrimento da realidade objetiva e de tentar mudar os fatos para adaptá-los à teoria:
In Bush’s Platonic reality, the world is dangerous, threats exist, and the evidence of our senses must be interpreted to fit that larger truth. On the night he launched the war, for example, Bush told the nation, “Intelligence gathered by this and other governments leaves no doubt that the Iraq regime continues to possess and conceal some of the most lethal weapons ever devised.” Russert asked Bush whether, in retrospect, that statement was false. Bush replied, “I made a decision based upon that intelligence in the context of the war against terror. In other words, we were attacked, and therefore every threat had to be reanalyzed. Every threat had to be looked at. Every potential harm to America had to be judged in the context of this war on terror.”
You can hear the gears turning in Bush’s mind. We were attacked on Sept. 11, 2001. That attack exposed a new reality. That new reality changed the context for interpreting intelligence. Or, as Howard Dean less charitably puts it, if Bush and his administration “have a theory and a fact, and [the two] don’t coincide, they get rid of the fact instead of the theory.”
Trata-se, como se vê, de uma espécie de sociopatia. Não muito diferente, aliás, daquela que acometia o presidente americano anterior (e, neste ponto, Saletan está equivocado).
Divagando um pouco, noto que conhecemos bem esse tipo de raciocínio aqui no Brasil, porque toda a discussão política nacional está fundada na renitente negação da realidade objetiva, e, assim sendo, não passa de um diálogo entre sociopatas.
É exatamente por isso que se crê, por aqui, que a “vontade política” basta para superar qualquer entrave aos projetos megalomaníamos (e, de certo modo, platônicos) de “mudar o mundo”.
